ROGER HODGSON: in London and Kitchener, with Orchestra

Mini tour from 15th to 17th July

I knew about the short canadian Roger's tour but I decided at the last minute take a short holidays for attending the shows and visiting Toronto & the Niagara Falls. It was great, I do recommend it.

Three shows were booked in London, Windsor and Kitchener, Ontario, but finally the show of Windsor was cancelled due to some problems of the promoter and the coincidence with the festival of the city, and it was postponed to 12 October 2004. It was an idea of the composer Peter Brennan, fan of Supertramp and Roger Hodgson, who made the arrangements for the orchestra and offered it to Roger, as a tribute, and Roger was glad to find time to do it.

31 piece orchestra, the sound was not loud, but pure classical, nothing to do with the powerful show "Night of the Proms". No drummer, no electric bass nor electric guitar, just classical sound and the keyboard and the wonderful voice of Roger.

90% capacity aprox. in London, less in Kitchener, it was missed some promotion from the organizers. No ad, no posters,.....

The setlist included some old hits from Supertramp times (Logical song, Breakfast in America, Dreamer, Give a little bit, etc... obviously the hits Roger composed for Supertramp when he was the main member in the band) and some unusual songs on the concerts of Roger solo, like "If everyone was listening" and "A soapbox opera", really brillant with the help of the orchestra. In this last one number three choir young kids in english-looking prep school uniform shirt/ties/sweaters come off of stage right to sing the 'all creatures great and small... ' falsetto part ... very sweet touch, like angels. They also stay out to end the song with the 'ahhh,ahhhh' vocal.... It was like the album !! At the end of the song, extremely well received by the audience, Roger said, "Thanks a lot, guys ... Don't steal my show again."

The song I've found the best and powerful arrangements was "Hide un your shell", beautiful.

It was also included a couple of Roger after-Supertramp songs, Lovers in the wind and Only because of you, very emotional.

Roger was playing his keyboard the whole show (his new Korg Triton Pro already debut last May in the Night of the Proms, instead of the Korg Trinity) and he only took his 12 string guitar at the end for the encore, Two of us and Give a little bit.

It was good vibrations between Roger and the audience, relaxed atmosphere, very good welcome. The audience requested more encore for a long while, but Roger said humble, no more songs ready for the show.

Roger was wearing similar clothes to Night of the Proms, long - sleeved puffy sleeved shirt white colour, white pants & white runners & a black & white vest.

The sound and the venue of Kitchener was better, and also the orchestra was more practised and confident.

- Roger performed the song London on the show of London, no comments...
- Also in London it was a surprise........Dougie Thompson (ex-Supertramp, bass player) was in the audience !! When Roger started the song "Dreamer" he said "This is for you Dougie......". After the show Roger cancelled his commitments and spent time together with his old friend, Dougie "scaped" for a while from Chicago, busy music manager )

After the concert in Kitchener Roger met his friends-supporters for a while, more than an hour, most of them did a long trip to see Roger. Some chats, autographs, pictures, etc. It was great meet again my old friends and also new ones. I remember Jamie, Sid, Rob, Anthony from Toronto, Jim from Buffalo, Jester from Virginia, Frank & wife from Florida, Jan & wife from Santa Barbara, Alan from NY, Uwe from Stuttgart, Sebastian from Montreal, Lorna from Vancouver ?, Sarah from London UK, Peggy from Gröningen, ....

Next show this December, night of the Proms in Germany. See you there.

ROGER HODGSON EN CANADA CON ORQUESTA, JULIO 2004

Aprovechando la corta gira canadiense de Roger aproveché para decidir en el último minuto tomarme unas pequeñas vacaciones y visitar además Toronto y las Cataratas del Niagara. Fantástico, lo recomiendo a todos aquellos viajeros.

Estaban anunciados tres shows en las ciudades de London, Windsor y Kitchener, en Ontario, aunque finalmente el show de Windsor fué cancelado por la coincidencia con el festival de la ciudad y se ha aplazado al 12 Octubre 2004. Fué una idea del compositor Peter Brennan que hace tiempo le propuso a Roger hacerle unos arreglos orquestales de temas de Supertramp como simpatizante de su musica, como homenaje, y que ahora Roger encontró un hueco en su agenda para hacerlo.

La Orquesta no era demasiado numerosa ( 31 músicos) y el sonido no era del tipo espectacular de los "Night of the Proms", sino algo más intimo y clásico, volúmen bajo acompañando a Roger de fondo. Una orquesta pura, sin batería, (solo las percusiones tipicas de orquesta) ni bajo electrico o guitarra electrica. Solo la orquesta, el teclado de Roger y su maravillosa voz.

En London hubo un 90% de audiencia y en Kitchener algo menos, se echaba de menos algo de promoción por parte de los organizadores.

Las canciones interpretadas fueron algunos éxitos de Supertramp como Logical song, Breakfast in America, Dreamer, Give a little bit, etc... (los éxitos que Roger compuso durante su paso por Supertramp ) y algunos temas no tan usuales en los conciertos de Roger en solitario como "If everyone was listening" y "A soapbox opera", que con la ayuda de la orquesta ganaban en sonoridad y ambiente. En este último tema aparecieron tres niños cantando a coro las notas angelicales del intermedio del tema, en el tono perfecto del disco, y se quedaron hasta el final del tema con el 'Ah, ah....Ah, ah......' fué curioso.
Cuando acabó la canción, muy ovacionada por la audiencia, Roger les dijo sonriendo: "Muchas gracias chicos, no me volvais a robar mi show ...."

El tema donde encontré los arreglos orquestales más potentes fué "Hide un your shell", con mucha fuerza.

También se incluyeron un par de temas de Roger post-Supertramp, Lovers in the wind y Only because of you, muy emotivos.

Durante todo el concierto Roger estuvo al teclado (su nuevo Korg Triton Pro que ya estrenó en Night of the Proms en Mayo, y que sustituye al Trinity) y solo al final para hacer los bises tomó la guitarra de 12 cuerdas e interpretó, como no, Two of us y Give a little bit.

Hubo una buena conexión entre Roger y la audiencia, ambiente muy relajado y muy buena acogida.
El público coreó y exijió más bises, pero Roger humildemente dijo que no habían preparado nada más, que lo sentía de corazón.

El vestuario era similar al empleado en Night of the Proms, camisa vaporosa de manga larga blanca, chaleco blanco y negro, pantalones y bambas blancas.

El sonido y el local fueron mejores en Kitchener, además la orquesta tocó con más confianza. Un par de curiosidades:

- En London se permitió la licencia de interpretar el tema "London", sobran comentarios...
- También el London se contó con la discreta presencia entre el público del ex-bajista de Supertramp, Dougie Thompson, a quien Roger dedicó el tema "Dreamer". Dijo "Dougie, esta es para ti......". Tras ese concierto Roger anuló todos sus compromisos y le dedicó tiempo a Dougie, que se había escapado de su trabajo de manager en Chicago para ver al viejo amigo.

Tras el concierto de Kitchener Roger dedicó una hora y media larga para saludar en el backstage a todos los amigos que habían hecho un largo viaje para verle, firmar autógrafos y sacar fotos. Fué un placer reencontrarme de nuevo con viejos amigos y conocer algunos nuevos. Recuerdo a Jamie, Sid, Rob, Anthony de Toronto, Jim de Buffalo, Jester de Virginia, Frank & esposa de Florida, Jan & esposa de Santa Barbara, Alan de NY, Uwe de Stuttgart, Sebastian de Montreal, Lorna de Vancouver ?, Sarah de Londres, Peggy de Gröningen, ....

Próximo show en Diciembre, Night of the Proms en Alemania, nos vemos allí !!
