DUBAI JAZZ FESTIVAL: ex-british party, March 10, 2006
I took a last minute decision for going to Dubai (crazy idea) but honestly it was a great experience. Great concert and great trip.
The Dubai Media City amphitheatre is just a huge natural grass amphitheatre, beautiful, placed in a big park, seats in the middle, huge stage with a big video screen placed over the stage, and several private terraces at the back made by he luxury hotels placed in Dubai for their clients, with a grand view over the amphitheatre.
Behind the stage a beautiful lake with fountains. And spectacular skyscrapers surrounding the park. It was like an american town, all new, big and clean. Wow……
It was a lovely night, warm temperature, summer time.
The park was full of people, but comfortable due to the natural shape as amphitheatre.
More than 6.000 people attending the show (as the organizer told us).
Most of them european faces. (I was really surprised about the big amount of europeans living in Dubai)
After the show of Jean Luc Ponty, a break and ….. Mr. Roger Hodgson !.
The sound was clear and really powerful. Impressive.
The welcome of the audience was really warm, very good ambiance.
The huge screen over the stage helped to see Roger and Norbert even closer.
Roger played his habitual keyboard (Korg Triton), a grand piano and his 12 strings guitars.
Norbert Fimpel was on stage too with Roger (who already played with Roger several times in the past) playing the saxophone/clarinet/harmonica.
And a surprise for the last song (keep reading……)
The audience had fun from the beginning.
Alter some screams from the audience Roger realized they are british, most of them. So Roger spoke to them, some jokes, and called them ex-british (laughs) and played the song “London” for them (not initially in the set list) due to the lyrics…. it was so funny….. («I really miss the rain…», not much rain in Dubai….)
Norbert played the saxophone in some songs as usual, the intro of «Hide in your shell» with the harmonica, the clarinet in «If everyone was listening«, the harmonica in «Take the long way home«, etc…. a big help to reach a wonderful sound. Good job, congratulations !!
I really enjoyed the show a lot, the audience too, we all had a lot of fun, Roger too, looking for a close connection with the people as he loves.
Roger was in a really good shape, what a nice voice, what a nice sound from the instruments, nice playing …… he still surprise to me again and again, show after show.
The sound from the keyboard (+ control mix) was impressive in some songs, like “Hide in your shell”, “Open the door” and «Dreamer”, the three songs sounding with a impressive bass sound pushing my lungs !!! Simply fantastic.
And, again, he was lovely towards the audience.
There was much of Supertramp in the show (the hits that Roger composed when he was member of the band) and also some songs from the solo albums, like «Lovers in the wind«, «Open the door«, and «London» (see the set list).
After the last song the audience was acclaiming Roger for a while, the speaker lady was pushing the people to scream “We want Roger !!!” and finally Roger came back for the encore. And a nice surprise during “Give a little bit”.
Jean Luc Ponty came to the stage and played his violin after the saxophone solo in “Give a little bit”. It was amazing.
I tell you the truth, they arranged the surprise that same morning, in a casual way during the soundcheck, when Roger and Jean Luc said “good morning” to each other on stage.
And, that’s incredible how they were rehearsing just 5 minutes, a couple of times, and sounded perfectly.
So the agreement was easy…… they are simply masters.
Roger transmitted much peace and care and it was again a magical night.

As an evidence of the succes, I let you know a lot of people came to the merchandising stand (where I was collaborating) after the show looking for a CD of the tour !!!
I forwarded the request to the Roger’s management :o)
More shows are comming soon in Canada and Europe this summer.

DUBAI JAZZ FESTIVAL: fiesta de ex-británicos, 10 Marzo, 2006
A última hora decidí lanzarme a la aventura, y viajar a Dubai para conocer esa parte del mundo y la verdad que la experiencia ha sido muy gratificante, tanto por el concierto como por lo que he visitado. Un viaje recomendable.
El lugar del festival era precioso, un gran parque de hierba en forma de anfiteatro natural, con sillas en el centro, un escenario gigante, y cerrando todo el perimetro una serie de bares y terrazas privadas (reservados) de los hoteles de lujo (Sheraton, Hilton, Meridien, etc….) con vista privilegiada. Una gran pantalla gigante sobre el escenario.
Tras el escenario un bonito lago con fuentes. Y espectaculares rascacielos en los alrededores.
Daba la sensación de estar en cualquier ciudad americana. La verdad que muy bien montado, de lujo.
La noche del concierto la temperatura era muy agradable, como en las noches de pricipio de verano en España.
El sitio lleno, pero sin agobios por la forma de anfiteatro natural, más de 6.000 personas, la mayoría de ellos europeos. (me sorprendió ver la cantidad de europeos que viven en Dubai)
Tras la actuación de Jean Luc Ponty y un breve descanso, presentaron a Roger.
El sonido super potente y claro. Un diez.
La acogida del público fué fantástica, gran ambiente.
Roger tocó con su teclado habitual (Korg Triton), un piano de cola y sus guitarras.
Y le acompañó Norbert Fimpel (saxofonista habitual en los últimos años) al saxo/clarinete/armónica.
Y una sorpresa en el último tema (seguir leyendo….)
El publico se volcó desde el principio, muy animado.
Por ciertos gritos del público Roger se apercibió que los británicos eran mayoría,
(ex-británicos como el les llamó entre risas) así que les dirigió algunas palabras y les dedicó el tema London, no previsto inicialmente, por su irónica letra como hecha a medida para la ocasión……. fué muy divertido.
La letra dice que «Echo de menos a la Reina y echo de menos la lluvia de Londres….»
Roger comentó que con este clima tan agradable no le extrañaba que estuvieran contentos viviendo en Dubai :o)
En este concierto Norbert hizo sus colaboraciones habituales:
saxofón en diversas canciones, la intro de Hide in your shell con la armónica, clarinete en «If everyone was listening«, armónica en «Take the long way home«, etc…lo cual ayuda mucho a la sonoridad de los temas.
A veces los pelos de punta !!! Felicidades Norbert !!!
Roger estuvo a un gran nivel, sigue sorprendiendo por su fantástica voz que no pierde cualidades, y por el fantástico sonido que saca de los instrumentos. Sigue sorprendiéndome show tras show.
El sonido del teclado en algunos temas era realmente espectacular, sobre todo en Hide in your shell, Open the door y Dreamer, las tres con unos bajos imponentes presionando nuestros pulmones !!! Fantástico.
Y como siempre, muy entrañable con el público.
La pantalla gigante ayudaba a no perderse detalle del show.
Hubo mucho de Supertramp (los éxitos que Roger compuso mientras estuvo en la banda) y algunos temas de Roger en solitario como Lovers in the wind, Open the door y London. (ver el Set list)
La ovación final cuando Roger se despidió fué bestial, la presentadora/animadora del evento empujaba al publico a gritar «We want Roger !!!» por un rato y Roger volvió a salir para hacer el típico bis.
Esta vez hubo una sorpresa por la aparición de Jean Luc Ponty durante Give a little bit, para acompañar a Roger y Norbert con su violín. Sonó de maravilla.
La verdad es que lo habían preparado de manera casual por la mañana durante el soundcheck, tras el saludo habitual entre artistas al encontrarse en el escenario, y es increíble como en cinco minutos lo ensayaron un par de veces y no hizo falta más. Son simplemente grandes maestros…
Tras el bis se repitió la historia, la gente insistió, pero Roger ya no volvió a salir …….
Roger transmitió mucha paz y cariño y fué de nuevo una noche mágica.

Como muestra del éxito, comentar que una vez finalizado el concierto mucha gente se agolpó en el puesto de merchandising (donde yo colaboraba) buscando un recuerdo de esa noche. La verdad es que no daba a basto.
Muchos me pedían si tenía un CD de esta gira !!! y así se lo hice saber al management de Roger.
Hay más conciertos previstos para este próximo verano en Canada y Europa, no os los perdáis !!! Nos vemos allí……
