John Helliwell in Manchester, EVER OPEN DOOR
Manchester, November 8
John Helliwell of Supertramp is still going strong at 80. Recently, in October, he collaborated with some Italian musicians on a series of jazz concerts in Italy, and in November he performed a series of intimate concerts in England.
I attended the Manchester concert at the Blue Box Theatre. Accompanied by a string quartet, a keyboardist, and a conductor, he presented a show called «Ever Open Door,» same name than his previous album and the Supertramp song.
It included jazz pieces composed by conductor and composer Andy Scott, and some tracks from John’s album, based on Supertramp songs adapted to jazz. The final piece was indeed «Ever Open Door,» but a very «free» adaptation, quite different, and with many jazz improvisations—a fantastic finale!
Since it was an intimate concert, John went on at length telling stories about the songs he was playing, and at one point, when introducing a song called «The Wondering Stranger,» he made a pun to explain that a «wondering stranger» had come all the way from Barcelona specifically to see the concert, and he called out my name, «MAC, where are you?» looking for me in the audience, hahaha.
He explained that we’re great friends, a very thoughtful gesture on his part. After the concert, he took the opportunity to greet his fans and friends while selling his records and his book, «A Room with a View,» which he signed for me using the joke he’d made live. (see the attached pic)
This curious book is actually a collection of photos that John took from the window of each hotel during Supertramp’s 1977 tour. A curious idea, isn’t it?
Anyway, as always, the trip was worthwhile, sharing great music with such talented people. We all had a very pleasant evening, like family, with a great atmosphere. music and friendship.

John Helliwell de Supertramp sigue en la brecha a sus 80 años. Recientemente, en Octubre, ha estado colaborando con unos musicos italianos en unos concierto de jazz por Italia, y en Noviembre ha realizado una serie de conciertos intimos por Inglaterra.
Asistí al concierto de Manchester, en el Blue Box Theatre. Acompañado de un cuarteto de cuerdas y un teclista mas un director, ofreció un show llamado «Ever Open door», como su disco anterior, y la cancion del mismo nombre de Supertramp.
Incluía temas de jazz compuestos por el director y compositor Andy Scott, y algún tema del disco de John, basados en canciones de Supertramp adaptadas al jazz. El ultimo tema era precisamente el «Ever open door», pero una adaptación muy «libre», muy diferente, y con muchas improvisaciones de jazz, un gran final !!!
Al ser un concierto íntimo, John se explayaba a contar historias sobre los temas que iba interpretando, y en un momento dado, al introducir un tema llamado «The wondering stranger» hizo un juego de palabras para explicar que un «wondering stranger» había venido expresamente desde Barcelona para ver el concierto, y dijo mi nombre en alto «MAC, where are you ? (MAC, ¿donde estás? ) buscándome entre el público, jajaja
Y explicó que somos grandes amigos, todo un detalle por su parte. Me convertí en el centro de atención por un rato, jajaja. Tras el concierto aprovechó para saludar a sus fans y amistades durante la venta de sus discos y su libro » A room with a view«, que me firmó utilizando la broma que había hecho en directo. (debajo tenéis la prueba)
Precisamente éste curioso libro, se trata de un libro de fotos, que John fué haciendo desde la ventana de cada hotel durante la gira de Supertramp en 1977. Una curiosa idea, no ?
En fin, como siempre valió la pena el viaje, compartiendo buena musica con grandes talentos. Pasamos todos una velada muy agradable, en familia, con muy buena música y muy buen ambiente.
